SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol officers were involved in a short pursuit on Thursday, July 30 with an electric motorcycle.

The electric motorcycle was being ridden in a reckless manner, including wheelies, crossing in front of traffic on a busy highway, and speeding.

The 15-year-old male rider then failed to stop and attempted to evade officers when they went to stop him using lights and sirens. After the short pursuit, the rider finally stopped. CHP released the rider to a parent.

The electric motorcycle was impounded under a code that requires it to be impounded for a minimum of 48 hours.

The rider could be facing charges that include, but are not limited to, evading police, reckless driving, being unlicensed, no insurance, no registration and no motorcycle helmet. CHP reports he was wearing a bike helmet.

The rider has also been in contact with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for similar activities.

CHP says complaints about electric bicycle/motorcycle riders have increased in recent months.

Due to the popularity of e-bikes and local conflicts, the agency has increased enforcement and education efforts.

On July 22, the agency shared an infographic about the different classes of e-bikes and the rules and laws that apply to each.

CHP says if a vehicle marketed as an e-bike can exceed legal limits (such as a 40 mph throttle-only mode) without pedaling, the CHP classifies it as an unregistered moped or motorcycle. Local CHP divisions frequently issue public warnings and impound these illegal high-speed bikes.
