INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Washoe County Sheriff’s Office officials say a series of intentional tree poisoning incidents at Burnt Cedar Beach dating back to 2022 appear to be connected, adding new details Tuesday as the investigation continues.

Incline Village Patrol Captain Joseph Colacurcio said investigators have documented 28 affected trees over three separate incidents. Six trees were damaged in 2022, another six in 2024 and 16 more were discovered this year.

“Looking forward, if the trees were to die, we are looking at well over $300,000 in damage,” Colacurcio said.

Because each incident occurred in the same area of Burnt Cedar Beach and followed a similar pattern, investigators believe the cases are connected.

Incline Village General Improvement District staff said several trees poisoned in the 2022 and 2024 incidents died within months and had to be removed. Stumps from the 2024 incident remain visible at the beach.

Investigators are awaiting the results of soil samples to determine what substance was used in the latest poisoning. Colacurcio said laboratory testing could take several months.

While investigators believe the poisonings were intentional, Colacurcio said it is too early to determine a motive.

“Maybe it’s malicious, they might have intent, but I can’t speak to motives at this time,” he said.

Previous investigations into the 2022 and 2024 incidents did not identify a suspect.

Colacurcio noted that Nevada law provides criminal penalties for intentionally damaging trees and other vegetation, and anyone responsible could face substantial charges.
