To try and decide each week where and what to eat in and around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.

Lucky for us in Tahoe, when it comes to cheesesteak sandwiches, we don’t have to have the argument if we’re team Pat or team Geno like they do in Philly. But if there were some kind of rivalry around the basin, I just may be team Tunnel Creek with this week’s feature.

This behemoth is loaded with thin shavings of rib eye, sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, and is finished off with hearty topping of beer cheese. One of the best things about this sandwich is that you can taste each of the individual ingredients in supremely layered fashion, but they also play so well in the sandbox together that they transition into each other seamlessly.

The steak is ultra juicy and has little crusty charred pockets throughout and the peppers and onions are just sweet enough to balance out the earthiness from the mushrooms while the beer cheese pulls some double duty to tie it all together. I honestly wish I had that beer cheese on tap in my kitchen, although I’d probably need to refill the keg at least twice a week.

Typically, the flavors of a cheesesteak fall on the rich side which can often times weigh you down. Here, you still get that richness, but it feels on the lighter side. I don’t know how they do it, but I’m definitely here for the feeling … and maybe a second sandwich to take home for leftovers tomorrow.
