SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – An earthquake struck near Fallen Leaf Lake early Friday, Oct. 2, with an epicenter about 10 miles from South Lake Tahoe.
The U.S. Geological Survey first reported it as a 3.6 event, but later downgraded it to a magnitude of 3.27 earthquake near Stanford Camp on the west side of Fallen Leaf Lake at a depth of about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles).

The Lake Tahoe Basin is home to three major fault zones: the North Tahoe-Incline Village fault zone, the West Tahoe-Dollar Point fault zone and the Tahoe-Sierra frontal fault zone.
During an earthquake, safety officials recommend getting underneath a sturdy table or desk to protect against falling objects. If no shelter is available, drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops. Doorways are generally not safer than other areas inside a building.
