To try and decide each week where and what to eat around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.

With a name like The Honorary Texan, you probably could guess that this week’s feature is a take on the classic “western” cheeseburger. And that would be a pretty good guess. But what you likely won’t guess is how this version amps up the flavor in surprising and tasty ways.

Starting with the beef, the Parker Ranch patty is joined between potato bun slices by applewood smoked bacon, roasted Ortega green chili, lettuce, tomato, bourbon grilled onions, cheddar cheese and a house battered onion ring. In addition, you’re treated to a supreme battle of dueling sauces on your tastebuds: a sweet and smoky barbecue sauce and a creamy chipotle mayo.

For me, what this burger has over all other western-style burgers is the roasted chili and the chipotle mayo – each bringing in a ton of flavor. That slightly sweet smokiness of the chili getting a second helping of creamy smokiness from the chipotle is what really sets this burger apart.

The bourbon onions and onion ring add an abundance of textures and richness, and the lettuce and tomato provide plenty of freshness to counterbalance. And even though you can barely get your mouth around each bite, it won’t matter much because no matter the bite, you’ll be treated to a layered flavor bomb each time.
