It's tax season and residents in Tahoe-Truckee can receive free help preparing their federal and California tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

This service, available only for households with income under $55,000, helps people receive all of the tax credits and the biggest refund they are legally entitled to, while saving money on tax preparation fees.

One of the few VITA sites in the Tahoe-Truckee area is operated by Tahoe Family Solutions, a nonprofit based in Incline Village that provides counseling, camping and education services to children and families in the Lake Tahoe area. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns, with a thorough quality review performed on every return to ensure accuracy, according to Tahoe Family Solutions.

During the past four years, the Tahoe Family Solutions site has helped 665 local households claim more than $1 million in refunds while saving over $150,000 in tax preparation fees, according to a press release.

Tax preparation appointments are available every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. through April 12 in Tahoe Family Solution's offices at the Village Center; 774 Mays Blvd., Suite 13, Incline Village.

Appointments are required — no drop-in services are provided — and services are available in both English and Spanish. Call Tahoe Family Solutions at 775-413-5145 to make an appointment.
