Trail Talk Panel Discussion: The Tahoe Rim Trail Expedition | Tracking Plastic Pollution – 3:30 p.m., Keep Tahoe Blue Spurlock/Evers Environment and Education Center, 2877 Lake Tahoe Blvd. How does plastic pollution travel from Tahoe’s highest peaks to the Lake? Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Keep Tahoe Blue, and the 5 Gyres Institute for an eye-opening evening exploring how high-elevation science, outdoor recreation, and watershed protection intersect on the 174-mile Tahoe Rim Trail. When we look up at snowcapped peaks or across pristine alpine meadows, we see untouched wilderness. But even in Tahoe’s most remote backcountry, invisible human footprints remain. Learn about the Tahoe Rim Trail Microplastics Expedition, 5 Gyres Institute’s first-ever land-based, high-elevation scientific expedition. A team of researchers, outdoor advocates, and citizen scientists traversed the entire 174-mile Tahoe Rim Trail, collecting samples of air, soil, and backcountry water to better understand how microplastics move through the environment. During this special panel discussion, you’ll hear about the expedition, initial research findings, and what scientists are discovering about synthetic gear shedding, atmospheric transport, and how plastic pollution can make its way from mountain trails into Lake Tahoe. Event Schedule 3:30 PM | Reception Enjoy complimentary light beverages and a charcuterie spread before the presentation. 4:00–6:00 PM | Panel Discussion Hear from scientists and conservation leaders about the expedition, field logistics, early findings, and practical solutions for reducing plastic pollution. Interactive Q&A Ask questions about the research, microplastics, Leave No Trace practices, and how you can get involved as a citizen scientist. Meet the Panelists: • Dr. Victoria Fulfer | Microplastics Scientist, 5 Gyres Institute Expedition Lead specializing in global microplastic research and multi-medium field sampling. • Laura Patten | Natural Resource Director, Keep Tahoe Blue Expert in watershed protection, science-based policy, and local conservation. • Dr. Rachel Kozloski | Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Nevada, Reno / Desert Research Institute Environmental chemist specializing in microplastic analysis.
