To try and decide each week where and what to eat around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.
When it comes to pizza (and my complete love for it), I thought I had seen – and tasted – most topping combinations. Then this week’s feature came into my life. Who would have thought that mora, which is the Spanish translation of blackberry, would make for a must-have topping on a pizza … but here we are. And I’m glad I’m here for it.
To start, there’s always a high ceiling when it comes to AleWorx’s pizzas. The dough, and being woodfired, set a very high baseline for any and all their topping arrangements. This dish hits you with a combination of olive oil, blackberries, oregano, ricotta, mozzarella, Prosciutto di Parma, Mike’s extra hot honey, balsamic glaze, and basil.

The blackberries and prosciutto give you a sweet and salty one-two punch that was completely unexpected, yet insanely craveable. And while the mozzarella gives you plenty of cheesiness, it’s the pops of ultra creamy ricotta that do the heavy lifting in this department. And then, if all those flavors weren’t enough to pepper your tastebuds into submission, the sweet and spicy kick from the hot honey adds a chef’s kiss to each bite.
If you are one who likes to go out on Odyssey-like adventures with your pizza toppings, then this is a must try. My kids were a little dubious of trying this out at first, but after the first piece was taken down in record time, they not only expressed their disappointment in me for only having one of these to share but fought over who would get the last piece. I’d say that’s a pretty good sign.
