MEYERS, Calif. – Two Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) firefighters were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital on February 27 for injuries sustained while fighting a structure fire in Meyers during the early hours of the morning.

A 911 call was placed at 1:42 a.m., and the 2nd floor of the residential structure was up in flames before being noticed by an Alert California Wildfire camera located near Heavenly at 1:44 a.m. An AI-generated email with a picture and approximate location was sent to LVFPD from Alert Wildfire.

“When we arrived on scene, the house was heavily involved in fire, and we were able to quickly knock down the large volume of the fire and make entry,” said John McNamara, Fire Chief of LVFPD.

The two firefighters injured were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. “They are both at home and recovering now,” Chief McNamara told the Tribune. “They’ll be back on duty soon.”

The home was undergoing a window replacement renovation.

“Due to the fact that it was being renovated, more oxygen was available for the fire. Modern house, sealed up, limits the oxygen,” McNamara said, noting that several windows were missing. “It draws [oxygen] in like a campfire.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time, and although there was someone inside the structure when the fire broke out, the individual was able to escape without injury.
