Members of the two parents’ groups that have been reported as the victims in a $125,000 embezzlement issued a joint statement about the arrest of School Board trustee and former club treasurer Erinn Miller.

An Oct. 6 status hearing was set in Miller’s case and Senior Judge Richard Glasson found that she qualified for a public defender, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

While not commenting on the legal issues, the Zephyr Cove Elementary Parents Club and Whittell Boosters are seeking to reassure donors and the community.

“We … want to reassure our community that both organizations take the responsible stewardship of donated funds extremely seriously,” the clubs said. “The Parents Club and Boosters maintain clear financial controls and administrative oversight, ensuring funds raised are used effectively for the benefit of students and school programs.”

The statement was posted on Sept. 9, the day after Miller’s arrest as a result of an investigation into the clubs’ finances prompted by parent complaints.

“We sincerely appreciate the continued trust and support of our parents, donors, volunteers and wider community,” club organizers said. “Our focus remains on responsibly supporting the students and school communities of Zephyr Cove Elementary School and George Whittell High School.”

Glasson, who served as the Tahoe Justice of the Peace for more than 20 years, is hearing the case because Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace Michael Johnson recused himself due to a conflict.

Miller asked that her ankle monitor be removed but the Glasson said she needed to submit a request in writing before it would be considered.

Miller is out of custody after she posted bail not long after her arrest last week.

On Tuesday, the school district announced that Miller was taking a leave of absence until her case was resolved.
