STATELINE, Nev. – South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cody Bass will appear in court again on Sept. 15 after a judge postponed his sentencing Tuesday morning at a Douglas County courtroom. 

The judge issued the decision at what was supposed to be his sentencing hearing for a guilty verdict he received at a bench trial on Aug. 13 for harassment.

The continuation is the result of Bass’ attorney, Adam Spicer, requesting that the court allow Bass to take the stand to respond to witness comments made at the bench trial. Spicer said Bass did not make threats to the victim in the case, which the prosecutor’s closing arguments relied on.

The prosecutor argued that Bass had already exercised his right and did not testify. He also argued that the victims in the case are seeking a prompt resolution.

The judge stated that the delay would be felt by all parties, and that if there is justice to be heard, continuing the matter to the 15th would make any judgment conclusive and not subject to a later motion to reopen.

Bass’s attorney said at the hearing Tuesday morning that he would have his request filed by the end of the week. 

The court proceedings are a result of Bass’ September 25 arrest last year after an altercation with a bouncer at AleWorx in Stateline, Nev. 

Bass was originally arrested and charged with assault, trespassing, and harassment. The assault charge was later dropped.

Bass was found not guilty of the trespassing charge at the Aug. 13 trial.
