INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – A Fourth of July fireworks show has been announced for the Incline Village region in honor of America’s 250th. The announcement follows a roughly nine-month-long period to recover last year’s fireworks barge after it sank during a windstorm.
After what was reported to be a very difficult, challenging, and technical operation, the sunken fireworks barge was removed in March.
Last year’s fireworks show was organized under a Nevada domestic nonprofit corporation called Incline Fireworks, Inc.
This year’s show is organized under a new domestic nonprofit corporation called Tahoe Fireworks, Inc. formed on March 25 with a few of the same officers as Incline Fireworks, Inc.
The fireworks show announcement reveals the show will again rely on a fireworks barge, surrounded by a buoy-marked safety zone. The website says the show is a professionally produced fireworks display, permitted through the appropriate local, regional, state, and federal agencies.
The Tribune reached out to fireworks organizers to ask whether last year’s incident factored into this year’s decision and whether any mitigation measures were in place to prevent a similar incident.
Kristie Wells, a director of both nonprofits, says Tahoe Fireworks is launching the fireworks display from a different set of barges that have undergone pressure testing to verify they are seaworthy and suitable for use on Lake Tahoe.
The barges were placed in the water Wednesday morning.
The show is said to be a longstanding tradition and is supported by local donors.
The fireworks are planned for launch from a location east of Incline Beach and are expected to be visible throughout Incline Village, Crystal Bay, and the North Shore.
The event is scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.
